CASE OF SUCCESS: Hydrous Ethanol Distillation Apparatus coupled to the "Ecovin JL®" Vinasse Concentration Apparatus


The equipment was entirely designed, manufactured and installed by Citrotec® in partnership with Etech. The technology has a production capacity of 500 m³/day.

With several projects in over 20 years of operation, Citrotec® has several success stories. Today we will talk about the most recent challenge, entirely designed, manufactured and installed by the company in partnership with Etech: the Hydrous Ethanol Distillation Unit coupled to the Ecovin JL® Vinasse Concentration Unit.

The equipment was developed specifically to meet the client's needs. "Etech has worked with us for many years creating distillery projects, molecular sieve and neutral alcohol apparatus, among others. We have united the best technologies in the market so that the sugar-energy sector is served in all its specificities," says the technical director of Citrotec®, Paulo Henrique Sampaio.

The project follows all ISO 9001:2008 quality standards and several regulatory standards, such as NR-13, ASME, ANSI, ASTM, API, AWWA, ABNT and NBR6123.

The installation of the equipment took one year due to the complexity of the technology. Citrotec® specialists performed the start-up and monitored the performance during the first months of production. Now, the team will provide maintenance and technical assistance services.

Ethanol Distillation Apparatus coupled to the Ecovin JL® Vinasse Concentration Apparatus

The Hydrous Ethanol Distillation Apparatus coupled to the Ecovin JL® Vinasse Concentration Apparatus has a production capacity of 500 m³/day and has additional equipment that makes all the difference in the operation and production: reboiler, evaporative condenser and molecular sieve with a production capacity of 300m³/day.

The Distillation Apparatus, Etech's greatest expertise, was designed for the production of high quality ethanol. To do so, it has a wine depletion column, a wine purification column, a rectifying column, a bottling column, a reboiler, a wine heater, a main condenser, a guardian condenser, a wine pre-heater, a main condenser, a hydrated ethanol cooler, a fusel oil cooler, a reflux flask, and a fusel oil decanter. Besides several centrifugal pumps, interconnections, valves, instrumentation, and control of the unit.

The Ecovin JL® Vinasse Concentrator, on the other hand, developed, designed and manufactured with Citrotec® technology, has been of extreme importance to the sugar, ethanol and energy market. Vinasse is an issue of concern for the industry and has been discussed over the years.

With Ecovin JL®, the company presents solutions to the problem. The project has evaporator tubes, pre-heaters, reheaters, regenerative wine heaters and an evaporative condenser. Just like the Distillation Apparatus, it has centrifugal and vacuum pumps, interconnections, valves, instrumentation, and unit control.

Another important component of this successful Citrotec® and Etech project is the molecular sieve for the production of anhydrous ethanol, in which water is 99.9% evaporated through an absorption process. The technology has adsorption vessels, ethanol evaporator, drag separator balloon, ethanol superheater, main condensers, guardian condensers, washing column, collector balloons, preheaters and heaters. And just like the other equipment, it also has valves, interconnections, and instrumentation.

The entire project involved a large, highly specialized team from the engineering, manufacturing, transport, assembly, painting, technical assistance, cleaning, commissioning, pre-operational training, and start-up sectors.
